New works went up this weekend at Socrates Sculpture Park; I was enraptured by Zilvinas Kempinas's "Scarecrow," a site-specific piece that's 250 feet long and 13 feet tall. It shimmers in the sunlight and whistles hollowly when the wind picks up. A panorama is nice, but it really does the work no justice. Go see it, stay awhile.

Kenneth Pietrobono's Selections from the Modern Landscape, part of EAF 13 at Socrates Sculpture Park, riffs on the shifting economic, political, and social "landscape," renaming 90 plant species throughout the park "to reflect the competing elements that shape our surroundings." The result is an interesting take on how to make the familiar new again.
A new sculpture, a giant red-and-yellow wooden megaphone, is up at Socrates Sculpture Park. New pieces are still being installed, and I couldn't find a sign indicating the artist behind the work, but it's great fun: you can stick your head in the sculpture and sing out to the East River, as I saw several people do today.

The inflatable Buddha (Floating Echo) may be getting more mainstream attention. But for my money, one of the most interesting pieces at the Emerging Artist Fellowship 2012 exhibit at Socrates Sculpture Park is Feed by Fernando Mastrangelo. Head down by the water to see the Virgin Mary cast in seed -- and it might not be a bad idea to go now, before the birds pick the rest of her away.
Seen off the shore by Socrates Sculpture Park: a mysterious watercraft. Look forward to seeing what this turns into! Last week, apparently, only the floating wooden circle was anchored out there.
